I bet you $17

You will never guess what this is and how it came to be.

Sure, it's pretty, in a funny, 5th-grade-art-project kind of way.

Sure, you too could hold one in the palm of your hand - if you had a kid with an upper respiratory infection and a firm belief that herbal remedies are much more worthwhile than a trip to the germ-infested doctor's office. And a very disorganized kitchen.

Getting warmer? I bet you $17 you still don't know what it is.

(Anyone else have a found art project, or kids+chaostheory=butterfly-flaps-its-wings-and-creates-cute-nonsense-in-brooklyn kind of thing they'd like to share?)

those are plastic b-day candle holders melted upside down onto a playdough lid. why did someone make that, I don't know. but I'm quite sure that's what it is.

It is cirtus peels(lemon an orange) and honey with the b-day candle holders. I am not sure what it is all sitting on. I know the lemon and honey are good natural remedies for colds.

I think that it is half of an orange.

It's a circle of melted birthday candle wax with the wicks and candle holders sticking out. What happened?

Did it melt from trying to clear his URI with steam/herbs, and in the process melt the candles being stored in a cup/mug?

hmm...you were trying to make some kind of makeshift netti pot out of birthday candles, and forgot to remove the candle holders?

dindingdingding, christel guessed what it was.

as to how it happened, she's pretty close, too. i'll give her half the prize money for that, i guess. :) unless anyone else has a flash of inspiration from God (pretty much the only way you could really guess the whole story, i would think) and wants to guess for the whole thing?

(hi emily! long time no see, yo)

Only half the prize money? Come on now, I think Christel did a bang up job getting that much of the story right... I, for one, am very impressed.

what's 3/4 of $17?

You're right, she did. And her guess as to how it happened is pretty much as close as anyone is going to get, I think.

So P had a snotty nose that would not go away, and we were putting a big bowl of steaming water with a few drops of eucalyptus oil in his room every night to help get rid of it.

So one night, as I opened the cabinet to get the eucalyptus oil out, a plastic cup full of birthday candles/holders jumped out at me. It had clearly been lying in wait. Of course, it landed in the bowl steaming hot water on the counter below. It was a mess. The candles melted almost instantly, and I scooped most of them (and their holders) out with the cup and set it down on the counter in the midst of all the other stuff that lives on our counter.

Where I totally forgot about it until a few days later, when I found the cup and what was left of the candles and holders in a solid little puck at the bottom. And I swear it took me a looong time to figure out what it was and where it had come from. So I thought that, obviously, since I had trouble figuring out what had happened, and I had been there, it would be hard for anyone else to figure it out. Silly me. :)

Christel is obviously much better at figuring out the messes I make than I am. :) How about I write you a check for $12.75, Christel?

Sounds like a good deal Christel, I'd take it.

... Christel is like our generation's version of Encyclopedia Brown.

Everyone remember that character? Loved those books as a kid.
