Irene's devastation

We had candles! We had flashlights! We had emergency food and an emergency radio and gallons of water in jugs and a refugee spending the night (a friend whose apartment was closer to sea level than ours)!

And then Irene hit, and it rained and gusted, and when we woke up in the morning and went looking for scenes of devastation, we saw this:

So, yeah, the damage to our particular block was really, um, minimal.

We watched a bit of the women's cup while it was on at the diner in our neighborhood. P says he's now a soccer fan. Not sure if he just means "TV fan", but it sure kept him quiet for 45 minutes straight...

Family re-onion

We went to the beach in NC for an awesome family reunion (my dad's whole side of the family). There were cousins, cousins and more cousins! We had so much fun, there was barely time to take out the camera and take pictures. But here are a few highlights (keep in mind, these are the boring moments, when our hands were free to hold a camera, not being otherwise occupied eating crabs or building sandcastles or gripping boogie boards):

And if that's not enough for you, you can see more pictures here, here and here. :)
